The Presidential Secretariat and the Presidential Staff hold the Bak Maha Festival on an elaborate scale.
The Bak Maha Festival organized at the Police Grounds in Bambalapitiya commenced this morning under the patronage of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne. The Prime Minister who joined in the launch of the Bak Maha Festival was warmly welcomed by President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge and Presidential Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath. After the hoisting of the National Flag the Prime Minister declared the inauguration of the Festival.
Various traditional sports events added colour to the Festival. Members of the Presidential Secretariat and the Presidential staff as well as their family members joined in the festival. The presentation of awards and trophies to winners of the competitions took place under the auspices of President Rajapaksa. The President received a very warm welcome on his arrival for the Festival.
The President who viewed how the competitions of the Bak Maha Festival were held joined in the presentation of prizes. Also the President symbolically handed over prizes to the staff.
The selection of the Avurudu Kumari of the 2014 Bak Maha Festival took place with the participation of First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa and Indrani Sugathadasa. The First Lady crowned Thisari Erendra Herath who was elected as the Avurudu Kumari. Around 50 competitions were held at the Bak Maha Festival which was organized for the ninth occasion.
Ministers Bandula Gunawardena and Rajitha Senaratne, President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunge, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Presidential Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath also joined in the function. Also Chief of Defence Staff General Jagath Jayasuriya, Army Commander General Daya Ratnayake and Police Chief N.K. Ilangakoon were among those who graced the occasion.
