A false national unity programme will not bear fruit in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is a nation enriched with humanity friendly feelings. These observations have been made by the President.

The Conference on National Unity was held at the BMICH in Colombo this morning. It was held under the patronage of President Rajapaksa. Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara presented to the President the National Charter for National Unity. It was crafted by the Ministry of National Languages and Social Integration.

Thereafter addressing the conference the President emphasized that it is now possible to talk about national unity and national integration today, as it has been possible to build a free country.

The President recalled an occasion in which national unity was projected to the maximum. The occasion was the winning of the World Cup yesterday. There were no Sinhala, Tamil or Muslim differences, when Sri Lanka clinched the World Cup. Even religious differences were not witnessed on this occasion. The North, the East, the Hill Country and the South explicitly displayed national unity by lighting crackers and joining hands. This is mainly because of their feelings towards the motherland.

The President said that the entire country is in a position to talk about national unity and national integration as the country enjoys freedom. The country is able to host such a conference as there is a suitable environment. National unity is being guided by national heritage.

Senior Ministers DEW Gunasekara and Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena, Douglas Devananda and Rauf Hakeem, Deputy Minister Muttu Sivalingam and Secretary to the Ministry of National Languages and Social Integration Malkanthi Wickremasinghe were present on the occasion.
