The lives taken away by the ruthless tiger terrorists during the dark era is inestimable. Terrorism was fast spreading like a pestilence causing immense damage to lives and property. If not for the fearless leadership of the President the country would have still being plagued by these insurgents.
The brave soldiers are the eternal heroes who made supreme sacrifices to bring peace to the country under the leadership of the Commander in Chief.
The tiger terrorists mooted a ruthless attack after storming into the area close to the 03rd mile post in Trincomalee on 02nd June 1986 and brutally shot and slaughtered ten innocent unarmed civilians. It was on 02nd June 1987 that the terrorists cruelly murdered 31 Buddhist monks at Aranthalawa and displayed their ferocity and ruthlessness. The entire world grieved over these deaths.
On 02nd June 1992, the terrorists unleashed several attacks in the Akkaraipattu and Potuvil area. As a result 12 innocent Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim civilians died. On the same day two war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland in another terrorist attack in Batticaloa. The tiger terrorists lying in ambush in Mannar launched an attack on the war heroes on 02nd June 1995 and killed four of them. On the same day they unleashed another attack in the Thiriyaya area and killed four more war heroes.
Demented by the heavy defeats suffered, the terrorists killed two innocent civilians in the Palaly area on 02nd June 1996 while on the same day two war heroes who were caught up in a landmine explosion died in the Jaffna area. The terrorists mooted an attack on 02nd June 1997 on war heroes who were plying in a vehicle in the Valachchenai area. As a result the country lost the valuable services of six war heroes.
In the year 2007 also on a day like today, the terrorists unleashed a heinous attack at the 214 Brigade Headquarters in the Pudukulam area. 40 war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the motherland. Kalawanchikudi was the next target of the ruthless terrorists. In this assault unleashed on 02nd June 2008, the terrorists took away the lives of two innocent civilians. On the same day these merciless terrorists killed three war heroes in another gruesome attack in the Koli Kevilkulam area.
Terrorism which was scourge for the country was routed by the brave soldiers on 18th May 2009 enthroning permanent peace. By then the terrorists had killed 63 innocent unarmed civilians and 78 brave soldiers on 02nd June throughout the dark era. The total number of lives taken away by these barbaric terrorists in this manner was 141.
Following the unwavering and fearless decisions taken by President Rajapaksa as the Commander in Chief and the prudent guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, the members of the Security Forces succeeded in advancing in the humanitarian operations and eliminating terrorism from the motherland, making supreme sacrifices.
This was mainly due to the immense dedication made by the troops. All communities are leading peaceful lives with happiness, fully reaping the fruits of freedom which have been enthroned in the country.
Certain hostile forces are determined to destroy this peaceful environment. But the patriotic fraternity of the motherland will never permit such forces to raise their heads again.
The nation has proven this with clear evidence emphasizing that they remained with courage and strength with the Commander in Chief and the Government.
These dark memories are being refreshed in these episodes that the nation may act responsibly in a manner that ensures such destruction would not recur. Action has been taken to display the photographs of the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices in the battle to rout terrorism and discharge a noble service as an honour to the sacrifices they have made.
