The brutal murders carried out by the tiger terrorists during the terror period is the best factor to portray their ruthlessness to the world.
It was the Commander in Chief and the heroic soldiers through immense sacrifices that ended terrorism which caused carnage and destruction to public property for three decades.
The tiger terrorists, who grabbed the lives of two war heroes who were serving in affiliation to the Kiran Army Camp on 15th June 1983, commenced their campaign to devastate lives on this day throughout the dark period. On 15th June 1990, five more lives of war heroes were taken away in a terrorist attack in the Mankulam area. And also on the same day the terrorists unleashed several attacks in the Talaimannar, Yakawewa, Muttur and Mannar areas. As a result of these assaults, 48 war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the country.
Vavuniya was the next target of the tiger terrorists. In the attack mooted targeting the war heroes who were according security to innocent civilians, the terrorists killed 16 war heroes. This heinous attack happened on 15th June 1991.
Lying in ambush the terrorists mooted an attack on the war heroes at Alampil in the Mullaitivu area on 15th June 1992, killing four heroes. On 15 June 1997, the terrorists grabbed the lives of 17 war heroes in the Ampitiya area. The tiger terrorists mooted several attacks on 15th June 1998 in the Kilinochchi areas and on 15th June 1999, in the Vellankulam area. As a result 14 war heroes gave up their lives on behalf of the unity of the motherland.
The ruthless terrorists devastated a bus exploding a claymore mine attack on 15th June 2006. 48 civilians including children were killed shocking the entire country. In another attack in the year 2008 also on a day like today, a savage attack was launched by the terrorists at a group of heroic soldiers in the Sivalakulam area. Two war heroes succumbed to these attacks.
Terrorism which was a menace for the country for 30 years was brought to an end on 18th May 2009. By then they had taken away a total of 183 lives on June 15th throughout the fear psychosis period. There were 52 innocent civilians in this toll while the other 131 were valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives on behalf of the unity of the motherland.
The members of the Security Forces who had the wherewithal to meet any eventuality, advanced in the humanitarian operations under the vibrant and dynamic leadership of President Rajapaksa and the prudent guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa vanquished terrorism and brought enduring peace to the motherland, making supreme sacrifices. This victory was achieved with much dedication.
Many members of the Security Forces sacrificed their lives as well as eyes, heads, hands and limbs in their brave attempts to enthrone freedom in the motherland. They are really eternal heroes after eliminating the LTTE war machinery. Although certain local as well as extraneous forces operative against the country cannot see the genuine bravery of these war heroes, the entire nation is eternally indebted to these war heroes who brought freedom to the motherland.
It is the bravery and courage of the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices that are being recounted in these episodes. Action has been taken to display the photographs of the war heroes who made supreme sacrifices in the battle to rout terrorism and discharge a noble service as an honour to the sacrifices they have made.
