The Urban Development Authority is geared to endow to the people who are visiting the congested Pettah area in the Colombo City to rest for a while. This is about the building complex which includes the Floating Market at Bastian Mawatha adding extra elegance to the City, in accordance with the greener and cleaner people friendly environment concept.

It is the floating market, Colombo’s latest attraction. Work on this project resulting in a massive development programme centering Colombo Fort, the main Railway Station in Pettah and the Central Bus Stand, is now nearing completion. The Urban Development Authority is handling the construction as another environment friendly project under the Colombo City Development Project. The Floating Market is being built by developing the canal way which was an unclean location near the Bus Stand.

Thousands of people including foreigners visiting Colombo can buy products at this market where 92 stalls have been set up to sell local products.

This floating market also targets foreign tourists interested in purchasing local products. Vendors who operate in the area adjacent to the market without any facilities will have stalls at this market. It is slated to be inaugurated within a short period.

It is mainly due to a concept of the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabhaya Rajapaksa that the Colombo city is developing rapidly eliminating garbage dumps, illegal constructions and traffic congestion. The entire nation will benefit as a result of this Project.
