Suspect's DNA matches with six killings in Kotakethana

Though various individuals were taken into custody under suspicion over the series of female murders in Kotakethana, Kahawatta, Ratnapura and adjoining areas during the past, the police were not able to prove that
they were the genuine killers. DNA reports of persons who had political affiliations and their accomplices were arrested; but their DNA reports too did not tally.

A 46 year old mother of two children by the name of Nadan Babu of Opathawaththa, Kotakethana was mysteriously killed in a tea estate in November last month as the last victim, after investigations launched by the police the murderer was taken into custody last Friday (11) by the Criminal Investigation Department and when his DNA reports were examined, what was stated in courts was that not only the said mother of two, but also 6 of the 7 murders reported from Kahawatta, Kotakethana had been committed by him, as proved by those DNA reports.

The last victim the mother of two who had  been heading towards her home after plucking tea leaves had been murdered brutally being cut and chopped by the suspect. What the suspect had confessed was that she was murdered with the motive of robbing the jewellery and cash that was in her possession. As compared with these DNA reports, it has been confirmed that a series of earlier killings which were suspected as having been carried out by some others had been committed by this same person and the police had told courts that it would be possible to extract further information regarding those crimes from him.

The Criminal Investigation Department therefore obtained permission from courts to detain the suspect for interrogation purposes till the 29th of this month.
