Matugama vendor who donated Rs.50 for PET Scanner machine

Yet another incident is heard behind the scenes of collecting-procedures of public funds targetting 200 million for the Maharagama Cancer Institute which incident ironically or so turned out to become a special news item last week. When it was publicized across the media for the collection of funds be credited to an Account at Bank of Ceylon, it was
seen that various people with various levels of income all around the country had volunteered to go to banks and donate whatever sum of money was at their disposal. It is of particular interest to note that the public had donated their monies at all 635 Bank of Ceylon branches in the country on behalf of this fund. While there had been some individuals who donated lakhs and millions of money , there also had been a host of persons who donated Rs. 50 as the lowest level of donation, it was revealed at statistics.

The media in the process had taken steps to find some information about a certain female from Matugama area who had donated her 'bit' in this manner. It was a woman who earned her living by selling leafy edible plants to the people. Her daily average earnings had been about Rs. 300. Having watched this support-programme over the television had gone a bank in Matugama area and had deposited her Rs. 50 for the Cancer Fund with a great sense of elation. Officers of the bank had accepted her 'bit' commenting, "if only somebody is benefitted by this sum of money too .. it's enough". They had in fact a further word of praise for her saying that although it was a small sum of money, her contribution nevertheless was more valuable than that money itself. The PET Scanner which has already been ordered would find its way to the country to serve the ordinary man in a short period of time.
