The highest number of tourists in the history of Sri Lankan tourism has arrived during this year.
A steady development has taken place in the tourism sector after the elimination of terrorism. The number of tourists arrived in the country during last year amounts to 1 million 5 thousand 606. The Tourism Promotion Bureau said that this number was exceeded this November. A Russian couple who arrived at the Bandaranaike International airport this morning marked the occasion. A special function was organised to welcome them. Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Rumy Jauffer and others participated in the occasion. The two Russian tourists Belova Tatia and Mikhalev Viteli were presented with a travel package to visit places of interest free of charge. The revenue from the tourism sector has been more than 1.5 million US dollars this year and the Government is expecting a boost. There has been an increase of 17 percent in the tourist arrivals this year. The objective of the Government is to draw 2.5 million tourists by 2016. A number of programmes have already been launched in this connection.
