A Surgical Safety Checklist has been launched in Sri Lanka for the first time.
The Health Ministry launched this Surgical Safety Checklist to maintain the standards of surgeries carried out in Hospitals and particularly to ensure the protection of the patients subject to operations. The launch of this list took place at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute auditorium this morning under the patronage of Deputy Minister Lalith Dissanayake. Such Surgical Safety Checklists have been introduced in Hospitals in almost all countries on the instructions of the World Health Organization.
More than one million people in the world die annually due to delays and mistakes committed during operations. About 70 thousand operations are being carried out in the country annually. The Government has taken cognizance of these factors. Accordingly the Standards Secretariat of the Health Ministry has formulated this list. The handing over of such lists to Hospitals and the presentation of laptops to facilitate its implementation also took place on the occasion.
Health Secretary Dr. Nihal Jayatilake and Director General of Health Services Dr. Palitha Mahipala were among those who joined in this occasion.
