100,000 kilos of expired sugar seized

100 thousand kilogrammes of expired sugar has been seized from Mutwal.


The Consumer Affairs Authority is continuously examining grocery shops with the intention of providing quality goods to the consumers. As a result officials of the Authority succeeded in uncovering a stock of expired sugar which was being packed with the intention of releasing the stock to the market. The expiry dates of the stock of sugar were being altered.

The raid was conducted based on a tip off received by the Special Bureau of the Mutwal Police. The Police said that two individuals who were packing the stock of sugar were interrogated.

Head of the Special Raids Unit of the Consumer Affairs Authority A.A. Jafoor said that stern legal action will be instituted against traders who are engaged in such fraudulent activities.

Mr. Jafoor said that they seized 2000 bags of sugar which were planned to be released to the market. Its value was 10 million rupees. The officer in charge of the storage facility and another were taken into custody and are being grilled. He revealed that a lawsuit will be filed under the Consumer Authority Act in the Maligakanda Courts on Wednesday.
