Although Prison officials and several politicos discussed the issue, the inmates emphasized that they would consider calling off their fast only if Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa approached them.

Accordingly Mr. Rajapaksa met the fasting inmates this morning and had a lengthy discussion. Thereafter they agreed to call off their fast. They got down from the roof and consumed their food. Three inmates were admitted to the Prison Hospital.

Expressing views to the media Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said that he would initiate action to grant maximum benefits to them after the President’s return to the island.

Mr. Rajapaksa said that the inmates had several issues. They handed over a letter to be given to the President. The President has already been informed of the matter over the phone. As soon s the President returns to the island a special discussion will be held with the participation of the Ministers in charge of the Prison and Justice Portfolios to consider their demands. The Parliamentarian said that the inmates were apprised of the situation and they agreed to it. He added that every one remained on the stand that their issue should be expeditiously sorted out.
