The Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade has said that a sum of 82 million rupees had been collected following the raids conducted by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) during last year.
Fifty thousand raids had been conducted during this period and 25,117 traders who had flouted the Consumer Act had been prosecuted. The highest number of raids had been carried out in the Colombo District. 3024 raids were carried out in the Colombo District and the number of cases filed was 3000. The total number of raids conducted in the Gampaha District was 2484 while in the Kandy District the figure was 2745.
It was possible to seize large stocks of food unsuitable for human consumption following the raids mooted by the Consumer Affairs Authority with the intention of safeguarding the consumers. Minister Johnston Fernando has said that action was being initiated against the culprits immaterial of their positions for deceiving the consumers.
