Divi Neguma Department now operative

The Divi Neguma Development Department is operative from today. Minister Basil Rajapaksa legalized the Department inking the relevant gazette notification at the auspicious time of 10.20 am.


The prime objective of the Divi Neguma Development Department established today under the Economic Development Ministry passing on benefits to five million people of 1.8 million families is to alleviate poverty from the country by the year 2016.

While Minister Basil Rajapaksa signed the gazette notification concerning the operation of the Divi Neguma Development Department based on the Mahinda Chinthana Extended Version, celebrations were held in 332 Samurdhi District Associations and 1074 Samurdhi Banks in 25 Districts through the country, giving pride of place to religious observances. These celebrations were joined by hundreds of thousands of Samurdhi and Divi Neguma beneficiary families living in 14,011 Grama Nilaldhari Divisions.

The Divi Neguma Bill was approved in Parliament with a majority of 117 votes on 08th January last year based on a ruling given by the Supreme Court.

Accordingly workers of five institutions including the Samurdhi Authority will be entitled to a pension. They will also be entitled to all benefits enjoyed by public sector employees.

Addressing the gathering present at the Economic Development Ministry, Minister Basil Rajapaksa said that Sri Lanka has to surmount many challenges in 2014. Present on the occasion were many Parliamentarians and senior Government officials.
