There has been a high response to the request made by the Police for motorbike riders in the Western Province to ride during day time by switching on their head lights.
Plans are afoot to enact a law on this respect if the trial mooted to minimize accidents achieved successful results.
The Police made a request from motorbike riders within the Western Province to run on roads during day time with their head lights on. The programme is aimed at minimizing accidents involving motorbikes. Brightly lit cycles could weave in and out of traffic without the risk of being accidentally run over by oncoming vehicles.
Drivers of other vehicles pointed out that the riding of bikes with the head lights during day time was an impetus to overcome accidents.
The Police are planning to extend the programme which is operative in the Western Province to the other Provinces in the future. Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that if it reaped good results, they intend to enact a law to make the operation of motorbikes during day time with headlights.
