PC’s have no authority to make proposals pernicious to country

It has been emphasized that Provincial Councils do not have the authority to bring forward proposals pernicious to the country simply because they enjoy power. Such initiatives are deleterious to the unity of the country.

The Tamil National Alliance in collaboration with the Tamil Diaspora is engaged in an untiring effort to put Sri Lanka into difficulty at the Geneva Human Rights sessions. The final aim of this effort was the approval of two proposals against the country by the Northern Provincial Council ruled by the Tamil National Alliance.

One proposal deals with plans by three Northern Provincial Councillors in the Geneva Human Rights Council session, while the other relates to a demand that an inquest should be held with respect to incidents that happened during the conflict period. It was asserted in the Central Provincial Council that these proposals against the country should be strongly deplored.

Addressing a special session of the Central Provincial Council Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake said that other Provincial Councils too had many proposals if necessary to be submitted to Geneva. The Chief Minister said that thousands of civilians who raised their voices on behalf of the country were massacred during British rule.

At the same time Mr. Ekanayake said that the number of innocent unarmed civilians murdered by the ruthless tiger terrorists also ran into thousands.
