The President of the Maldives arrives in the island on an official visit.
The new President of the Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom reached the Katunayake International Airport this morning. He was accorded a red carpet welcome. Senior Minister A.H.M. Fowzie, Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Senevirtne and Chairman of the Airport and Aviation Services Company Prasanna Wickremasuriya joined in welcoming the Maldivian leader.
The Maldivian President is visiting the island at the invitation of President Rajapaksa. He will remain in Sri Lanka until the day after tomorrow. During his stay, he is slated to have several rounds of bilateral as well as high level discussions.
This is Abdullah Yameen’s first visit to Sri Lanka since achieving victory in the Maldivian Presidential elections held in November last year. The prime purpose of his visit is to strengthen bilateral relations. Agreements are also expected to be signed on cooperation on Police Services, Vocational Training and Sports sectors.
Sources emanating from the External Affairs Ministry pointed out that the Maldivian President will also deliberate on cooperation in the crackdown on narcotics, health, sea security and tourism sectors.
