The Commission was appointed to inquire into the disappearances of persons during the conflict period. Inquiries into complaints lodged on disappearances from the Kilinochchi District commenced last Saturday. The inquiries drew to a successful close today. A notable feature was the opportunity accorded to persons who could not submit their complaints.

Expressing views to the media the manner in which the inquiries were conducted in the Kilinochchi District, the Chairman of the Presidential Commission on Disappearance of Persons P. Paranagama said that 152 complaints were taken up for inquiry. Information was initially secured from the complainants and they had the power to issue a set of instructions saying that the perpetrators should be penalized. He said that the President had instructed them to look into those responsible for disappearing persons and further make inquiries and also to report on any relief that should be granted.
