If you suffer from migraines the idea that you might be able to banish the pain with a click of a button would be nothing short of a minor miracle.
Now scientists say this could be a reality, following the development of a new hand held device which sends magnetic pulses to the brain. The treatment, called transcranial magnetic stimulation, involves holding the device behind a patient’s head and clicking a button to send brief magnetic pulses through the skull.
The pulses affect neurons in the brain, helping to disrupt the painful headaches. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which looks at the safety and suitability of new treatments, has now issued guidance saying the device can be recommended to certain patients through Britain’s publicly funded National Health Service.
