Relatives thank the Government for the efforts taken to secure the release of fishermen under Indian custody.

The relatives of fishermen who were under custody in India, have expressed their appreciation for the efforts taken by the Government to get them released. The Government took steps to get the release of 50 fishermen who were taken into custody near the Indian maritime border. The Indian Coast Guards handed them over to Sri Lanka Navy at the international sea off Kankesanthurai. The fishermen are from Wennappuwa, Chillaw, Thoduwawa, Negombo and Thalawila.


Indian Foreign Minister Salman Qurshid has said that India and Sri Lanka would work together to improve fishing while protecting marine environment in the Indian Ocean. He has mentioned this during a discussion about the problems faced by fishermen with Minister Dr. Rajitha Senarathna. Mr. Qurshid pointed out the need to be aware of the maritime boundaries by fishing communities. He emphasized that development of fishing in the Bay of Bengal would be done with the agreement of both countries. The Indian Foreign Minister assured to provide assistance to Sri Lanka to introduce new technology to the fishing community.
