Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has said that the Sinhala cinema which had suffered several setbacks had been brought to a commendable level due to the futuristic vision and prudent decisions taken by the President.
The Minister made this reference joining in a function held at the National Film Corporation. It was organized to mark the 64th Anniversary of the Sinhala Cinema and the 42nd Anniversary of the Film Corporation. B.A.W. Jayamanne who rendered yeoman service to the Sri Lankan cinema was commemorated on the occasion. Some of his films were also screened.
Minister Keheliya Rambukwella awarded pensions to 15 Film technical artistes. A book on the use of the cinema by B.A.W. Jayamanne and the Film Magazine of the Film Corporation were launched on the occasion.
Further addressing the gathering Minister Rambukwella said that an opportunity has been provided for the Sri Lankan cinema to step into a modern programme within another six months.
The Minister said that President Rajapaksa after ending the war frequently held talks on the cinema industry and took many decision for its wellbeing. This the Minister said will help the cinema to step into a modern programme. As a Minster he mentioned that he would accept this challenge. He added that the necessary foundation has already been laid to enter the digitalization system.
Minister Reginald Cooray, Secretary to the Mass Media Ministry Charitha Herath and cinema artistes were among the large gathering present.
