It is the present Government which granted all privileges to public employees and granted a recognition of the job.

Summoning a news briefing, Government Ministers were optimistic that the public employees would make a proper response at the Provincial Council poll to the United National Party which even proposed to curtail the pensions of the public servants.

Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa said that the last UNP regime took the initiative to curtail the workers in the public sector. But the Minister said that the present Government took a different stand. The public service was expanded under the leadership of the President. It is the present Government that increased the salaries of public servants in every budget. Minister Yapa said that since assuming office in 2005, the President took the initiative of increasing the salaries of the employees. From then onwards he increased the salaries of workers in every budget. The Government had done a tremendous job on behalf of the people. The UNP and the JVP were always talking about corruption and nothing was left for them to talk about. They include this particular word to every development project. This is their only slogan. But the Minister was confident that the public workers will not endorse it. He was optimistic that a large number of public workers would vote for the Government at the polls.

Minister Dilan Perera pointed out that when the President assumed office the salary of low a grade worker was only four digits. But the President increased the salary of the lowest grade worker to 11,000 rupees. The Minister pointed out that by now the minimum salary of an unskilled worker in the public sector is 21,000 rupees. He also granted three days leave for the father of a new born child. It was under his rule that the public servant was insured for 24 hours of the day. The Minister emphasized that it was in the last budget that the President proposed the appointment of a Commission to compare the status of jobs in the public and private sectors and formulate salary scales. He added that the work of this Commission was progressing through the establishment of sub committees.
