Postal voting begins tomorrow

Postal voting for the Western and Southern Provincial polls will take place tomorrow and the day after.

The Elections Secretariat has announced that postal voting should not be started before the scheduled time as intimated to political parties, authorized representatives and Independent Group leaders. Also no one who is serving in the respective establishment will be permitted to serve as poll monitoring representatives.

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has said that the polling location should operate as a normal polling booth and the voter should be given an opportunity to cast the ballot confidentially sans any influence. Also taking any photographs, any video recording or the use of mobile phones at the polling locations is barred.

The Elections Commissioner has also called on the media to refrain from making public or telecasting any such photographs or video footage.

In the meantime, Additional Elections Commissioner R.M.A.L. Ratnayake said that all arrangements are in place to the casting of postal ballots.

Mr. Ratnayake said that the casting of postal ballots for the Western and Southern Provincial Council polls will take place tomorrow and the day after. Postal Authorities have already handed over the packages contained the postal ballot papers to the certifying officers. If any certifying officer had so far not received the ballot papers, inquiries should be made from the post office concerned or the Returning Officer to whom the application was directed. The Additional Elections Commissioner requested the voters to cast their postal ballots during these two allotted days. Also the official poll cards for the voters will be distributed until the 21st of this month. He added that the Postal; Department will be distributing the official poll cards this Sunday.
