Dark memories on 22nd March

Can the value of the human lives taken away and the devastation caused to public property as a result of the ruthless terrorism which scourged the country for 30 years, be estimated? Many things that are inestimable were ruthlessly destroyed by the LTTE terrorists. This report recounts on such disasters unleashed by the terrorists.

The terrorists launched a shell attack on the 22nd of March 1982 in the Kankesanthurai area killing a war hero and thus embarking on their killing spree on 22nd March in the dark era. In the year 1987 the blood thirsty terrorists barged into the Horowpathana village and slaughtered 26 innocent Sinhala civilians. On 22nd March 1988, the terrorists unleashed a similar attack in the Mada-wachchikulam village. Nine innocent civilians were bumped off in this attack. On the same day they stormed into the Puddukulam village and brutally murdered six innocent Sinhala civilians.

In the year 1991 also on a day like today the tiger terrorists targeted an attack on the war heroes in Mannar taking away the lives of three war heroes. On 22nd March 1999, the terrorists opened gun fire also in the Mannar area and killed two war heroes. These ruthless terrorists mooted an atrocious attack at the Navy in the Nayaru area on 22nd March and grabbed the lives of 12 naval heroes.

On this same day, five war heroes who were caught up in a massive terrorist attack gave up their lives on behalf of the motherland. The incident happened in the Pariyanalankulam area. Kiri-Ibbanwewa North was the next target of these tiger terrorists on the same day. They killed three war heroes. On 22nd March in the year 2009, the terrorists succeeded in grabbing the lives of four brave soldiers in the Thampuram area.

It is recorded that 51 gallant soldiers lost their lives in attacks mooted during the period in which the country was plagued by terrorism. The number of civilian lives taken by the terrorists was 42. Accordingly, the total killed on 22nd March throughout the fear psychosis period was 93. If this brutalism unleashed flagrantly violating human rights was brought to an end on 18th May 2009 from the Nanthikadal Lagoon, the country would have still been entangled in a fear psychosis.

The members of the Security Forces who advanced in the humanitarian operations under the prudent leadership of the Commander in Chief President Rajapaksa and the able guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa succeeded in liberating the country from terrorism and enthroning sustainable peace.

Certain local as well as extraneous forces are determined to destroy the peace won with such dedications with the hope of destabilizing the country again. But it is sad to note that these groups which are making various allegations that human rights had been violated are not talking a single word on the priority given by the brave soldiers even in safeguarding human rights in the battle field. This is not because they do not have any awareness but because of their deceitfulness. No one is talking about the grave human rights violations committed by world powers such as Britain and the United States.

Their determination is to exert pressure on a government which ended terrorism and injected new life to the civilians to live without fear and suspicion. Whatever allegations were made by them the patriotic fraternity will not permit them to rise up against the motherland. The patriots have displayed this to the world not only by word but also by deed. It is the war heroes who ended terrorism and brought genuine freedom to the country.
