Lasith Malinga bowled brilliantly at the death to stifle South Africa to help Sri Lanka win.
Sri Lankan skipper Dinesh Chandimal won the toss and elected to bat in the Twenty20 opener in Chittagong.
South Africa left out captain Faf du Plessis who has been suffering from a hamstring strain while fast bowler Dale Steyn recovered from his injury and made it to the playing eleven.
