President Rajapaksa has emphasized that the present Government respects all religions, treats all faiths alike and also recognizes religious co-existence.

The President was addressing a public meeting held at the Samanala Grounds in Galle this afternoon.

Large crowds representing all areas of the Galle District began descending on the Samanala grounds from this morning. It was with keen enthusiasm that the crowds began gathering at the ground after arriving in processions.

The President who approached the venue of the public meeting amidst public applause was welcomed by the Parliamentarians. Thereafter the meeting commenced. Addressing the meeting the President underlined that the Government has embarked on a massive development programme while safeguarding religious coexistence. He accused that certain forces in collaboration with conspirators were attempting to paralyze country’s development path.

The President said that the situation that prevailed in the past was different. No one was able to profess their faiths. No one was able to visit the temple. Even attacks were unleashed at the Sri Mahabodhi and monks and devotees were killed. Attacks were launched in Kattankudy and Islamic devotees were killed in the mosque. The Dalada Maligawa was also attacked. As such no mentions should be made of the situation that prevailed during that period. But when the human rights sessions were proceeding some say that there is no religious harmony in the country. He requested those who make such accusations to see for themselves the religious harmony that is prevailing at this location. Leaders of all religions are present at the dais. There are Buddhist monks, Hindu priests, Moulavis and the Christian clergy. If so what are they talking about?

The President pointed out that the Government was always determined to carry forward the country sans any issues. Some are attempting to create disputes. Some foreign missions in the country were exploiting NGO’s and conspiring against the country. The President told the gathering that the people should be aware of such incidents. Some are attempting to distort facts.

Many people’s representatives including Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne joined in this public meeting organized by Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara.
