The Indian Central Government has reiterated to its Supreme Court that Tamil Nadu had no jurisdiction to order the release of the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case
It informed the Apex Court that such power was vested only with the Union of India. With death sentences of the Rajiv Gandhi being commuted to life imprisonment, the Tamil Nadu Government announced that it was taking initiatives to release the convicts. But the Supreme Court said that the consent of the Indian Central Government is necessary to release these convicts. Accordingly the Centre announced its opposition to this move.
The Centre issuing a statement with respect to the decision taken by the Tamil Nadu Government on 19th February justifying measures it is taking, reiterated that the State Administration had no authority to do so. The case is slated to be taken up again tomorrow.
