Sri Lankans living in Europe impress upon the United Nations to refrain from obstructing reconciliation in Sri Lanka.
The Sri Lankan community in Europe staged a massive demonstration opposite the United Nations Human Rights Council headquarters in Geneva yesterday. The Sri Lankans emphasized that they strongly rejected the tabling of Resolutions at the UN Human Rights Council, which obstruct the reconciliation process progressing in the island nation.
Handing over a letter addressed to Michael Muller, Actg. Director General of the UN in Geneva and Navanethem Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the demonstrators urged that Sri Lanka should be given adequate time and understanding to resolve its problems by itself without undue interference from countries influenced by the Tamil Diaspora.
The demonstrators pointed out that Sri Lanka has consistently interacted with the United Nations system and the wider international community in a spirit of goodwill and cooperation and that it expects reciprocity in future cooperation. A notable feature was the participation of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities in this demonstration.
