The funeral of veteran Cinema and Drama actress Mercy Edirisinghe will take place at the Ambepussa Roman Catholic burial grounds on Wednesday at 3 pm.
The veteran stage, cinema and tele drama actress as well as a radio artiste Mercy Edirisinghe passed away today. She was ailing for some time. She passed away at a Private Hospital in Gampaha this morning. She was 68 years at the time of her death. She embarked on her career as an artiste in the Navaka Mandala Musical programme in 1964. She began acting in stage dramas in 1967. Mercy Edirisinghe had playing leading roles in many dramas including “Hitha Honda Ammandi”, “Dunna Dunugamuwe” and “Thuranga Sanniya.” She became much popular among the public for the skills she displayed in comedy programme “Vinoda Samaya” with Annesley Dias, Berty Gunatilake and Samuel Rodrigo.
“Made Lagina Tharawan Nawannada Mang” This song will no doubt remind about this actress. She sang and also played the lead role in the Tharawo Igilethi stage play which became immensely popular.
The President took the initiative of looking into the needs of Mercy Edirinshge, since he heard about her illness. The President instructed Minister T.B. Ekanayake to provide the necessary financial assistance she needed to meet her medical expenses.
The remains of Mercy Edirisinghe are now lying at the National Art Gallery in Colombo. The body is due to be taken in a special motorcade tomorrow to her residence at No: 451 Kandy Road, Ambepussa in Warakapola.
