The Buddha arrived at “Kimbulwath” city on a Madin Poya Day to preach Dhamma to his relatives. He displayed “Yamamaha Pelahara” to eliminate pride in the “Shakya” cast people. The history of Buddhasasana states that they realized Dhamma after listening to “Wessanthara Jathaka Story” preached by the Buddha. Seven year old prince Rahula was ordained on a Medin Poya Day. Buddhist history has recorded that Maha Prajapathi Gothami attained the state of “Sowan” on this day. All temples in the island have organized religious programmes in connection with the Poya Day. “Amaa Dam Sisila” which is held on all Poya Days took place at Medamulana residence in Hambantota. Chancellor of the Kelaniya University and Chief Incumbent of Peliyagoda Vidyalankara Pirivena, Ven. Dr. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thera, delivered the sermon which was held for the 121st time. President Mahinda Rajapaksa, First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, Ministers, Parliamentarians and a large gathering were present to listen to the sermon. The “Sawanak Rass” programme telecast every Poya Day by ITN, was held at Buttala, Okkampitiya historic Dematamal Rajamaha Viharaya. The number of religious programmes had been organized throughout the day under the guidance of Chief Incumbent and Monaragala District Chief Sanghanayaka Venerable Galtenwatte Chandrajothi Thera. Lakhanda Radio’s “Shasanaloka” programme which is held on all Poya Days, took place at Buttala Okkampitiya historic “Dematamal Rajamaha Vihara”. The student monks were given books and their parents were felicitated.
