Special facilities for differently abled to vote

Additional Elections Commissioner R.M.A.L. Ratnayake has said that measures have been taken to grant several special facilities for the differently-abled persons to cast their ballot. Those who need such facilities should apply. Mr. Ratnayake said that some other person could accompany such voters.

The Additional Elections Commissioner said that if any partially or totally differently abled person finds it difficult to visit a polling booth to cast the ballot, such a person can be assisted to vote. There is a specific application form for this purpose. It could be obtained from the Grama Niladhari Officer or the Elections Office of the area or from the website of the Elections Department. The application form should be duly filled and submitted with the Grama Niladhiri certificate and a medical certificate.

Mr. Ratnayake pointed out that an assistant who is over 18 years of age should also accompany the applicant, who should not be a candidate or a representative of the polling booth. The person who is accompanying the differently abled person will then have the authority of casting the vote.

Any differently abled person who arrives sans an assistant can also vote. In this case, the Additional Elections Commissioner said that the officer in charge of the polling booth will cast the vote in the presence of another officer.
