Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva has said that amendments are being daily made to the Resolution against Sri Lanka presented in Geneva. The Minister was addressing the Freedom Alliance media conference today after returning from Geneva.
The Minister said that he was in Geneva until 2.00 pm yesterday. Until then he witnessed how amendments were daily presented to the Resolution. He said that Sri Lanka’s stand has not changed and it is totally against the conduct of an international inquiry. Human rights violations had not taken place in the island to the extent of a conduct of an international probe. The Minister mentioned that they made clarifications to State leaders, Foreign Ministers and Human Rights Commissioners of some countries about the views expressed by the Tamil Diaspora and what they were saying.
He said that Sri Lanka has achieved some victory by now. There has been a change to the stand that an international inquiry should be held. The Minister pointed out that by today they would be able to see the final draft. The United States had to change the draft which mentioned that an international inquiry was essential. He revealed that many countries pointed out that they would not support if the clause “an international inquiry was necessary” was included. Although it has been changed there is an issue.
He said that even at the final moment that is on the 26th they could include an amendment to it.
