An Indian Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation petition to direct the Indian Government to refrain from providing training to Sri Lankan Navy personnel.
The Madras High Court Bench dismissed the petition seeking a direction to the Central Government to desist from imparting long-term as well as short-term defence training in technical and non-technical streams to the Sri Lankan Navy personnel.
The Hindu newspaper reported that a Division Bench comprising Justice V. Ramasubramanian and Justice V.M. Velumani refused to entertain the case. They ruled that Courts were not empowered to interfere with issues related to the foreign policy of the State and its relationships with the neighbouring countries.
K.K. Ramesh, Managing Trustee of Tamil Nadu Centre for Public Interest Litigation, a Madurai-based NGO, had filed the petition claiming that the Centre’s decision to impart defence training to Sri Lankan Navy affected the sentiments of millions of Tamils in the State.
