Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has said that all arrangements were made to create an environment necessary for the conduct of a free and fair poll. He emphasized that he would not hesitate to institute legal action if state officials had flouted regulations in any manner during the conduct of the Western and Southern Provincial Council polls.

Addressing a news conference held at the Elections Secretariat today, the Elections Chief said that processions were held at several locations when nominations were received. But he was again requesting the Police Chief to take action against those who staged processions opposite District Secretariats. No action will be taken with respect to other complaints that have been made. Some Government officials were granted leave to engage in politics.

The President has been informed of this and they are holding inquiries. He emphasized that these initiatives were being taken not with the intention of penalizing the culprits. Anyone can hold a free and fair poll. He mentioned that the intention of the Elections Department was to create a pertinent environment for the staging of a free and fair poll in collaboration with the Police Department, politicos, voters and the media. He would do his best to do so. He said that as the Elections Chief he would appear in this respect. He added that they took maximum initiatives to create such a climate.
