Mahapola Scholarships to be increased

It has been decided to increase the number of Mahapola Scholarship recipients yearly on the instructions of President Rajapaksa. Ministers who joined in the awarding of the Mahapola Scholarships for 2014 revealed of this decision.


The awarding of scholarship for recipients of the Colombo District under the Mahapola Scholarships programme was held at the BMICH today. The number of students eligible to receive Mahapola Scholarship for 2014 is 14 thousand 800. The Mahapola Scholarships programme was mooted by former Minister the late Lalith Athulathmudali.


Deputy Ministers Nandimithra Ekanayake and Hemal Gunasekara joined in the function held at the BMICH.


Ministers Bandula Gunawardena and Johnston Fernando explained in detail the initiatives taken to increase the number of Mahapola Scholarship recipients.


Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that no one can enter a University in Sri Lanka despite the best creations in the world. Even the talented or the skilled person cannot enter the traditional University network in the island. Students should talk about this issue and stage protests. Discussions should be held to change the situation. The Education Minister wished that the Mahapola programme leads to moulding a person to become a resource to the universe and also become an honour to the school they studied and also to face the challenges.


Minister Johnston Fernando made a fervent appeal to the University students to think twice before staging struggles. There is a leader who gives an ear to the people and the children. Anyone can talk with leader and make appeals. The country did not have such leaders earlier. The Minister said that no one had requested to increase the Mahapola Scholarship from them. The Fund is being daily consolidated. He said that they are always prepared to talk about any issue.
