The Consumer Affairs Authority has seized a stock of 80 tonnes of big onions unsuitable for consumption.
The Gampaha Special Raids Unit of the Consumer Affairs Authority recovered this stock valued at around six million rupees. The stocks had been concealed with the intention of releasing them to the market for the festive season. The big onions, rotten and not fit for consumption had been stashed in two 40 foot containers within the Welisara Economic Centre. It has been revealed that these stocks were to be issued to bakeries, hotels, weekly fairs and food processing centres at low prices.
The Consumer Affairs Authority said that the big onion had been imported from India by a businessman from 5th Cross Street in Pettah. Legal action is to be instituted against the supervisor of the warehouse and drivers of the two containers.
