Sri Lanka has been declared as one of the 11 countries in the Southeast Asian zone which has totally eradicated the Polio virus.
The World Health Organization has made this declaration after the conduct of a study. The certificate of Sri Lanka being declared a Polio Free Country was handed over to Minister Maithripala Sirisena by WHO representative in Sri Lanka Dr. Firdosi Rustom Mehtha. The handing over of the certificate took place at a conference held in Colombo yesterday. Former Health Ministers P. Dayaratne and Nimal Siripala de Silva were among those present on the occasion.
