The Army Media Spokesman has referred to the keen enthusiasm displayed by Tamil young men and women of the North to join the Army. But Brig. Ruwan Wanigasuriya said that recruitments are not taking place at present due to lack of vacancies.

The Army Spokesman made this reference at a media conference in Colombo in response to a a query raised by a journalist from ITN with regard to a statement made by TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran that Tamil youth who had joined the Army were facing various hindrances.

The Brigadier said that there was no ban for a Sinhala, Muslim, Tamil, Burgher or a person from any other community to join the Army. Only a handful of youngsters joined the Army in the past due to the fear of the LTTE terrorist outfit, as they had imposed a ban although they had no legal right to do so. However, some joined. Brig. Wanigasuriya said that that the Parliamentarian who had made this statement was clearly aware of it. As an MP appointed from the LTTE outfit, this may still be working in his mind. Any citizen of this country has the freedom to join the Sri Lankan Army.

Today, young Tamil men and women are eager to join the Army based on the existence of vacancies. But the Army Media Spokesman said that their issue was the lack of vacancies. But some who cannot bear this development are attempting to spread various rumours. He added that it is a contemptuous situation to prevent an opportunity gained by the youngsters.
