A national Plan has been crafted to face any natural disaster regionally.
The Plan was chalked at the conclusion of the Tempest Express – 24, staff planning workshop in Colombo today. The Workshop was jointly organized by the US Pacific Command of the US Department of Defence and the Sri Lanka Defence Ministry. The Tempest Express 24 Workshop which commenced on the first of this month drew to a close today. It undertook a broad and comprehensive study of how immediate action should be initiated by the Security Forces during a natural calamity.
Foreign participants included 20 officials from the United States of America and representatives from 15 other countries namely, Vietnam, Canada, Bangladesh, Australia, Philippines, New Zealand, Nepal, Maldives, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Singapore, Thailand and Japan. Twenty-three officials representing Sri Lankan defence forces also took part in the exercise along with 21 observers from the relevant local Ministries and Departments.
The opening of the Tempest Express 24 Workshop took place under the patronage of Chief of Defence Staff General Jagath Jayasuriya. This is the first time that a workshop of this nature which will build solidarity to work jointly during regional disasters, was organized in Sri Lanka.
