Many programmes have been launched to upgrade agricultural activities in the Eastern Province at the behest of the President. Action has also been taken to improve the economy of the farmer families.
President Rajapaksa has given instruction to Agricultural authorities to launch a number of programmes targeting the acceleration of agricultural development in the Eastern Province. In addition to paddy cultivation which is already being carried out, the President has intimated to the Provincial agricultural authorities to take immediate action to expand the cultivation of additional agricultural crops and to modernize the irrigation network with the aim of providing the necessary facilities to the cultivators.
Many successful results have already been achieved as a result of the programmes mooted by the Government to develop the Eastern Province after the end of the conflict. A significant growth is witnessed in the agricultural sector and the farmer community that has succeeded in providing a successful yield through the cultivation of paddy during the last two years had done their utmost to uplift the national economy.
The Agricultural Ministry is of the view that the economy of the farmer families could be further enhanced by expanding the cultivation of additional crops. Several projects are in place to impart the technical knowhow to the farmers, grant them the required relief and also the consultancy services.
