President Rajapaksa begins his tour of China. The President was accorded a military Guard of Honour on his arrival in Shanghai. The Pakistani President also meets him. President Rajapaksa arrived in China this morning on a Sri Lankan Airlines flight, commencing his three-day official tour. On arrival at the Pudong International Airport in Shanghai, the President was accorded a warm welcome by Deputy Secretary General of the Shanghai Municipal Government Huang Rong, Executive Vice President of Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries Wang Xiaoshu and Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in China Mr. Ranjith Uyangoda. President Rajapaksa will attend the Fourth Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia in Shanghai tomorrow. The theme of the Conference is Strengthening Confidence and Solitarity and Building a Peaceful and Stable New Asia. The number of member countries of the Conference is 23. Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Qatar, Ukraine and the United Kingdom have secured Observer Status. In addition to participating in the conference, President Rajapaksa will hold bilateral discussions with some state leaders who have arrived in China to join the meeting. Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Foreign Secretary Kshenuka Seneviratne, Presidential Chief of Staff Gamini Senarath and Lieutenant Yoshitha Rajapaksa are accompanying the President.
