Reconstruction work on the historic Somawathiya Road which

is frequently subject of floods every year has been completed.

It is scheduled to be vested in the public by the President on the 11th of next month.

The historic Somawathiya Road was in a serious dilapidated condition as it is frequently impacted by floods every year. Certain points along the road had also been washed away. As a result it was very difficult to travel. The road came in for President’s inspection when he visited the Somawathi Sacred Area two and a half years ago. The Chief Incumbent of the Somawathi Vihare appraised the President about the dilapidated condition of the Road.

Accordingly the President instructed the officials concerned to reconstruct the road and set aside the financial allocations needed for the repairs. The reconstruction which commenced two and half years ago has now reached the final stages. Work on this single lane road with a distance of 38 kilometres has now been completed with two lanes with a width of seven metres. The road spanning from the Polonnaruwa City to Sungawila with a distance of 26 kilometres has been carpeted and developed. Also the 12 kilometre road from Sungawila up to Somawathiya has been totally concreted and developed.

Hitherto it took at least two and a half hours to travel on this road. But devotees can now reach the Somawathiya Sacred Area within 30 minutes as a result of the development of the Road. The Road is an impetus to the people of the area who earn their living through agriculture.
