Dark memories on 23rd June

The damage done by frenzied terrorism to the country denigrating the country for 30 years is inestimable.

The atrocious activities carried out by these merciless terrorists whose target was to take away as much lives as possible to achieve their ends are recorded in these episodes of the dark memories.


The tiger terrorists exploded a landmine in the Welioya area on 23rd June 1990 targeting a truck carrying war heroes. In this explosion eight war heroes gave up their lives on behalf of the unity of the motherland. On 23rd June 1992, the terrorists killed four more war heroes in a heinous attack in the Batticaloa area. The next targets of the terrorists were Vavuniya and Kudatthanai. In these two attacks unleashed on 23rd June 1997 the terrorists grabbed the lives of 17 war heroes.

Again on 23rd June in the year 1998, the terrorists unleashed a savage attack in the Kanagarayankulam area killing eight war heroes. On 23rd June in 1999, the tiger terrorists lying in ambush mooted another assault in the Madhu area. Four war heroes sacrificed their lives on behalf of the motherland.

On 23rd June in the year 2000, four war heroes lost their lives in terrorist assaults in the Ngarkovil and Vavuniya areas. Five war heroes made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country on 23rd June 2008, following terrorist assaults in the Malai and Kiri-ibbanwewa areas.

Terrorism which plagued the country in this manner was brought to an end on 18th May 2009. By then these merciless barbarians had taken away a total of 60 lives on 23 June throughout the fear psychosis period. There was an innocent civilian in this toll. The other 59 were valiant soldiers who gave up their lives on behalf of the motherland.

The unwavering leadership of President Rajapaksa, who is also the Commander in Chief succeeded in eliminating the ruthless tiger terrorism which the entire world considered as indomitable, from the Nanthikadal Lagoon in Wellamulliwaikkal.

The members of the Security Forces advanced in the humanitarian operations under the prudent guidance of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa routed the terrorists enthroning genuine freedom in the country providing a fitting lesson to the entire world.

Even after achieving this magnanimous victory amazing the universe, the President succeeded in providing another. Usually it is the tradition of countries to compensate a soldier who waged a war and sending him home. But President Rajapaksa deviated from this tradition giving another superb lesson to the world.

The President and the current Government had taken the necessary initiatives to inject new life to the war heroes who were totally rendered disabled on behalf of the nation. This programme is being mooted on a concept of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. Yesterday’s war hero is also a heroic soldier today. As such the people’s leader has succeeded in looking after them for sacrificing their eyes, hands and limbs in order to bring permanent peace to the nation.

As the Family Channel we always repeat this fervent appeal to the nation in this dark era episode not to forget these heroic soldiers who sacrificed their lives on behalf of the motherland.
