Priyankara Priyadarshana, her 33 year old son living in Mankadawala, Anuradhapura had died because of a heart ailment. His mother Hewagamage Daya Malani (60) had suffered a sudden shock as a result of his death and from the day she got news of his unanticipated death had been suffering from serious pressure and had collapsed had passed away during the process of offering Mathaka Vasthra Pooja. It is assumed that she had died because of a heart attack.

The son who had died is the fifth from among her 6 children. He had been employed in an administrative grade in a private establishment and was the father of 1 child. After news of the son's sudden bereavement fell on the mother's ears she had been crying by the side of his dead body and saying "My son there's no use of my living ... I'll also come to join you my son!" Before the final rites of the deceased child was conducted the Sangha had arrived at the funeral house and while in the process of offering Mathaka Vasthra in the company of relatives of the family she had collapsed at the spot.

The people who had gathered there thinking that she had fainted because because of not being able to bear the loss of her son had then taken her away from the spot and had sprinkled water on her face trying to bring her back to normal. Since these efforts did not bring expected results a certain doctor who was present at the funeral rites had examined her pulse. The doctor who observed that her pulse had stopped had urged the crowd there to dispatch her to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital promptly for treatment. Relatives of the family who took prompt action had transported her to Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital in which instance the doctors who checked her had announced that she had passed away.
