Husband suspects Grama Sevaka next door about wife dieing hanging -- incident of watching in hiding while she was bathing
"My wife who stayed back without going to work has mysteriously died. Now it's almost about 3 months. Next door Grama Sevaka got caught watching in hiding when wife was all alone. At the time wife was found hanging, her trousers were torn. But police suspect only me". That was what the husband said about his wife Maheeka Sachindani who was found hanging and dead last May 29th.
Saravanaraja Thavayogan (23) living in Colombo Road, Haputale and Maheeka Sachindani (19) of
Gokarella, Walpola wedded after a romance last March 14th. They had so got married amidst protests of Maheeka's parents. After marriage the couple had rented out a small room in Elivila, Gonavila and had been living there having found employment in a well-known garment factory in Pannala area, with the idea of beginning a new life. However, even before 3 months elapsed in their wedded life, Maheeka was found hanging dead on March 29th in 2017 in the room mysteriously where the two of them lived. Why Maheeka had hanged herself and committed suicided posed a serious question to both Saravanaraja as well as Maheeka's parents and though Pannala Police started investigations in connection with this incident, Saravanaraja complains that upto now the investigations are proceeding at snail's pace.
Mr. Saravanaraja Thavayogan, husband of Maheeka expressed his ideas to 'Mawbima' about this sudden death of his loving wife in this manner: "Both of us got married as a result of a love affair. After getting married both of us lived happily ... serving at a garment factory in Pannala. For these two months that passed by both of us have never quarreled with each other. In short ... Maheeka used to call me "thaththi" and I used to call her "ammi".
The day that this unfortunate incident happened, on the morning of 29th May both of us got ready to go to work. While going halfway Maheeka said "Ane thaththi I don't feel ok ... today of course I can't go". Once a month we get an attendance allowance from the working place. It was only 2 more days for that allowance to expire. So I told, "ammi ... we'll lose that allowance; so let's go". But she insisted that she's feeling so unfit and cannot go. She told me to tell the work place that her mother had suddenly fallen sick and that she had gone to attend to her mother. Then I told her to return home and to take a rest. Maheeka went back home and I proceeded to work.
The room where we stay on rent is owned by an akka who works at the same factory where we work. On that particular day she was off at 12 in the afternoon. So I told her "akke, Maheeka stayed back at home because she's not feeling well ... when you go back home, try to check on her". She agreed. Then later in the afternoon ... I can't now remember the time exactly ... maybe around 2 o'clock I got a message from the factory office asking me to come. When I went to the office they said "Saravanaraja you come to go a certain place". So saying they put me into a vehicle and came to the home where we were staying. Only then I came to know that my darling ammi has left me forever. She was hanging in the room where we used to sleep. I can't imagine what happened to me at that time. Pannala Police treated me in a very bad manner that moment. It was to me that they asked to get Maheka's body down from where she was hanging. When I brought her body down I noticed that she was still in the dress that she was wearing to go to work in the morning. The Denim she was wearing was torn. Though I told about this to police they didn't pay attention to it.
I told police that Maheeka's death was suspicious. Bu what police straightaway asked me was "don't you have an outside woman and isn't it because of that that she hanged herself like this?" Actually I didn't have any such connection. I loved Mahee more than my own life. I told police that I don't have a paramour ... if there is, to search for her and to bring her before me.
A Grama Sevaka lives on the other side of the room where we are. He's someone who created problems for our personal life ... has got caught two or three days peeping when Maheeka was bathing. Trying to talk about this matter on several occasions he had quarreled with us. At the time Maheeka came home, the surrounding is very lonely. The other thing is she was in the room all alone. I told about this to police. They even didn't care to make any reaction about it. Even when things were such the police went straight to that house. It was to that very same house that Maheeka's dead body was taken. Preliminary examinations also was conducted in that house. That night some people at Grama Sevaka's house has had a boozing session. But all the time it was me whom the police found fault with. They accused me saying 'It's you who is held responsible for this death!' How much I felt helpless at that time ... I can't express in words.
Now it's about 3 months since Maheeka has passed away. That day, apart from the examination conducted that moment, no other examination has been done by the police so far. What the police was trying to do was to throw the responsibility to my account. But I know very well that there were no issues between the two of us. Therefore this death is very suspicious to me. But the police take no interest at all in searching for the truth. I am waiting ... keeping my fingers crossed, thinking that this'll be solved today ... tomorrow. What I have to say is only this. If the police say that Maheeka died because of an extra-marital affair I had ... look into that connection and show me. If it's I who is responsible for this death ... prove the charges against me and send me to jail. But police is not doing any such thing and are keeping mum".
