The brave members of the security forces sacrificed their lives to create a country where all communities could live in harmony.
The soldiers ushered in sustainable peace by ending the LTTE terrorism that cast a shadow over the country for 30 years. In the absence of their victory, blood shed would have become the order of the day. The tiger terrorists hacked to death 6 fishermen in Morawewa, Trincomalee in 1987 starting the rampage on 22nd December days. On 22nd December 1990 eleven soldiers were killed in an LTTE attack on Thelippalai in Jaffna. Another group of 10 soldiers lost their lives in a LTTE ambush on 22nd December 1996 in Trincomalee. On 22nd December 2000 the terrorists launched a heavy attack to stop the advancing soldiers under the Kinihira operation. In the ensuing clashes that occurred in Ariyalai 44 soldiers laid down their lives for the unity of the country.
The members of the Navy who were engaged in patrolling the coastal area in Pallimunaiin Mannar came under LTTE attack on 22nd December 2005. Three sailors lost their lives. The LTTE launched an attack on the soldiers who were advancing under the humanitarian operation on 22nd December 2008 in Adampan, Iranamadu and Kumulamunai areas. Thirty nine soldiers were killed in the attacks. By 18th May 2009, the memorable day on which terrorism was annihilated, the LTTE had destroyed 127 lives including that of 9 civilians and 118 soldiers. The soldiers who advanced under the fearless leadership of President Mahinda Rajapaksa eliminated terrorism from the Sri Lankan soil upholding the unity, territorial integrity and the sovereignty of the country. Certain local and foreign elements are attempting to destroy this environment and create discord among the communities. Their target seems to be creating a conflict environment once again by leveling false allegations against the country. The patriotic people living in this country have understood the nature of these forces also learnt to thwart their attempts. They have displayed to the world that they are prepared to risk their lives to defeat such forces.
