China has not made any mention that Sri Lanka is violating human rights. Some had distorted the statements made by China. China’s stand on Sri Lanka remains unchanged. These references were made by Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris. He was addressing Parliament today.
Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said that Sri Lanka was a democratic giant in the whole of Asia. Vast development has taken place in the country in the economic, education and health sectors. He added that the world had endorsed it.
The Minister said that Parliamentarian Sumanthiran spoke of China. There was no truth in his statement. China released a statement three days ago. As some groups had come forward to distort the statement made earlier, the Chinese Government announced that a further clarification had to be made.
The External Affairs Minister claimed that in this particular statement, the Chinese Government clarified that they endorsed the work carried out by Sri Lanka. China has rejected the foreign influence on Sri Lanka under the guise of human rights.
MP John Amaratunge expressed his gratitude to the Speaker for the plans mooted to build houses on behalf of the Parliamentarians. He also expressed his gratitude for the sponsorship received from the Speaker with regard to their health activities.
