The United National Party has said that it does not endorse a visit to the North by the Indian Prime Minister who did not attend the Commonwealth Summit, at the request of the Northern Chief Minister. Making this reference in Parliament today, UNP Parliamentarian John Amaratunge said they strongly deplore any such visit by the Indian Prime Minister.
The UNP Parliamentarian said that there are reports that the Indian Prime Minister is getting ready to visit Jaffna at the invitation of the Northern Chief Minister. He queried from the House as to how he could visit the island sans an invitation from the President. They would leave no room for him to do so. If he is coming to the country at the invitation of the Chief Minister, they as the opposition totally oppose such a visit.
Mr. Amaratunge also queried as to how the Indian Prime Minister who said he cannot visit the country for the Commonwealth Summit, is now planning to tour Jaffna.
The UNP Parliamentarian said he had serious concerns about any moves to divide the country.
