Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe has said that accurate data is imperative to the world. He pointed out that the data of the Department of Census and Statistics is of much importance to him in Geneva. The Minister said that this clearly portrays the stability achieved by Sri Lanka after the conflict.
Minister Samarasinghe was speaking when the report concerning the listing of estates, the first stage of the economic census of the Department of Census and Statistics was handed over. A group including the Director General of the Department D.C. Gunawardena was present on the occasion. The purpose of the economic census was to study the stability of the economy achieved by Sri Lanka after the war.
Further expressing his views at the event held at his Ministry, Minister Samarasinghe said that last year’s tea production in Sri Lanka which totaled 340 million kilograms was a historic increase.
Minister Samarasinghe said that the Statistics Department was working in accordance with international standards. When anyone discuss statistics, they could place trust only in the statistics presented by the Department of Census and Statistics. Some are creating statistics to sell their books. As a result some in the world are using these statistics to point the finger at the country. Anyone can visit the website and study the statistics. It is with responsibility that the Department was discharging its task transparently.
