The damage done to the country by the ruthless terrorists committing brutal murders is inestimable. The entire country would have been stained with blood following carnage unleashed by the terrorists, if terrorism was not eliminated from the country. This is yet another episode of the brutalism unleashed by the terrorists during the dark era.
Six war heroes died in an attack unleashed by the tiger terrorists in Kokkupadiyaan on 20th January 1989. Thus unveiling their killing spree on this day during the dark era. On 20th January 1991, the terrorists mooted a huge attack on the war heroes in the Neelaveli area in Trincomalee. As a result of this skirmish, 20 brave soldiers made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the motherland.
Again in the year 1996, on a day like today, the terrorists took away the lives of two war heroes and also on the same day brutally murdered by opening gunfire at a civilian in Kattaparichchan. In the year 1997 on January 20th a group of terrorists stormed into the Palaly area mooting an attack killing three gallant soldiers. On the same day seven more sacrificed their lives on behalf of the country in an attack unleashed by the tiger terrorists in Pesalai. Morawewa was the next target of the terrorists on 20th January in the year 2000.
They targeted several serious mortar attacks on war heroes who were providing security to the civilians. Three war heroes who were caught up in these attacks made supreme sacrifices on behalf of the country. On the same day, they also unleashed mortar attacks on a village affiliated to Morawewa. Five civilians were killed as a result of this mortar attack.
The tiger terrorists launched a serious attack on a group of soldiers in the Ramanathapuram area in Kilinochchi on 20th January in 2009. Seven brave soldiers sacrificed their lives in this attack on behalf of the unity of the motherland.
Terrorism which was active in this manner was routed on 18th May 2009. By then the ruthless terrorists had killed eight civilians and 57 soldiers on 20th January throughout the fear psychosis period. The heroic soldiers who advanced without any hesitation due to the bold leadership given by President Rajapaksa, as the Commander in Chief, succeeded in uprooting terrorism from the country.
The war heroes endowed a free country to the nation even by sacrificing their valuable lives. As a result all communities are enjoying the fruits of freedom in a peaceful environment. But certain local as well as extraneous forces are determined to rouse communal feelings and destroy the peaceful lives led by the communities. However, the patriotic fraternity is aware of defeating such attempts.
World Powers such as Britain and the United States have flouted human rights on an unbelievably massive scale. But these powers sans talking any of the violations committed by them are demanding human rights reports from Sri Lanka.
It was many years ago that the Sri Lankan troops had displayed to the world that they are a group which respects and safeguards human rights. They even sacrificed their meals and drinks to the hundreds of thousands of civilians they liberated from the clutches of the ruthless terrorists, explicitly showing to the world the lesson of protecting human rights.
