61 fishermen freed as a result of discussions held to find solutions to the Indo-Sri Lanka fisheries disputes are due in the island today.
Discussions were held recently with the participation of Fisheries Ministers to sort out issues with respect to the fisheries issues impacting the two countries. As a result of these talks, an agreement was reached to release fishermen and trawlers under several stages.
Accordingly the handing over of 61 Sri Lankan fishermen and 15 trawlers released in this manner will take place in the sea limits in proximity to Kankesanthurai tonight. At the same time, the Fisheries Ministry announced that 59 Indian fishermen and three trawlers in Sri Lanka’s custody will be handed over to India.
In addition India has also released 12 more fishermen and three trawlers and the Fisheries Ministry said that arrangements were being made to get down the fishermen and trawlers soon. 60 freed Indian fishermen will be handed over to India in the next few days.
